Bulgaria’s government has named former foreign minister Solomon Pasi as its candidate to head NATO.NATO will name a new secretary general in April.

The 52-year-old Pasi heads Bulgaria’s foreign relations parliamentary committee. He served as foreign minister from 2001-2005.

After the 1989 collapse of communism, Pasi founded the Atlantic Club, a non-governmental organization to lobby for NATO membership. Bulgaria joined in 2004.

The bloc’s top official is a senior statesman from a NATO country, appointed by member states for a four-year term. The selection is made through informal diplomatic consultations among member countries, who put forward candidates. No decision is confirmed until all agree on one candidate.
