Bulgaria opposition calls confidence vote

Opposition lawmakers have called a confidence vote against the government, following major protests against alleged state corruption and worsening effects of the international financial crisis.

The vote, due to be held next week is the seventh censure motion leveled against the ruling Socialist-led coalition since it took office in 2005. The government has 150 deputies in the 240-member parliament and is expected to easily survive the vote.

Last month, students, farmers and medical workers staged rallies to demand the government resign over alleged corruption and a deepening economic crisis.

The EU has repeatedly criticized Bulgaria for insufficient reforms in the judicial system and failure to fight corruption and organized crime.
