Geert Wilders files appeal against UK ban

Freedom Party leader Geert Wilders has announced he will appeal against the British government’s decision not to allow him into the country. Last week Mr Wilders, a controversial Islam-critic, was refused entry into the United Kingdom to attend a viewing of his film, because of fears that his views could lead to public order disturbances.

During a debate in the Dutch Lower House, Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende and Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen reiterated that they did not agree with the British government’s decision but said they had no intention of pursuing the matter any further. Mr Wilders then announced he would initiate legal proceedings, even if they proved long and costly. Earlier, Minister Verhagen said he would support the Freedom Party leader if he went to court.
