Greek truck-driver strike continues

Greek trucks are blocking the country’s border crossings and harbours for the fourth day in a row. Drivers are protesting against what they say are inadequate border controls. They say illegal immigrants can easily climb aboard their trucks in the hope of reaching other European Union countries. The drivers say lax security has resulted in many drivers being wrongly sentenced for the smuggling of illegal immigrants.

The protests have prompted a furious reaction from Bulgaria, as they prevent goods from arriving from the Greek harbour of Thessaloniki. Earlier this month, in an unrelated protest, Greek farmers blockaded the border crossing between Greece and Bulgaria for ten days.
